What to Do in Tulsa This Weekend, Valentine's Day Edition

Tasha's Pick: South Central Golf & Travel Expo (Orange Headings = Sports Events) 
When: Friday, 11am-9pm; Saturday, 9am-6pm
Where: Expo Square, Central Park Hall, 4503 E. 21st Street
If you want a golf expo, Tulsa, the folks at South Central Golf will give you the mother of them. Don't miss corporate night on Friday, where there will be live music, drink specials and the chance to meet golf professionals from all over. Don't forget to enter the putting, the long-drive and the closest-to-the-pin contests. Tickets are $8, and anyone aged 17 or younger gets in free.

Tim McGraw Tickets On Sale (Blue Headings = Music Events)
When: 10am
Don't bother to heed Tim's advice this time - do take the girl to this April 8 concert. Tickets are $35.50, $49.75 and $69.75. Lady Antebellum and The Lost Trailers will also perform. If you want some of these tickets you'd better be on the BOK Center Web site at 10am sharp - my bet is that they'll go quickly.

Symphony By The Sea (Green Events = Stuff for Kids To Do)
When: 10am-noon
Where: Oklahoma Aquarium, 300 Aquarium Drive
Good news for those who love the sea as much as music: The Aquarium and Tulsa Symphony Orchestra have teamed to up present a blend of art and science education. Rotate between three stations, each featuring either woodwinds, brass or strings in the Coral Reef, Adaptation Gallery and Shark Adventure. Admission for adults with tax is $15.14, $10.80 for kids.

Women's Living Expo (Red Headings = Community Events) 
When: Friday, 10am-6pm; Saturday, 10am-6pm; Sunday, 11am-5pm
Where: Expo Square QuikTrip Center, Upper Level
What do women want? Food, fashion and fun, of course, and they can get it all weekend long at Expo Square. P.S. - I hear there's going to be a Firefighter Fashion Show on Saturday at 1pm - ladies, I wouldn't miss that if I were y'all. Admission is $3 at the door, or $2 with advance tickets from Reasor's.

If you're looking for an art market, cultural demonstrations, educational exhibits, storytelling, authentic American Indian food and student art exhibits, the SpiritBank Event Center is the place for you this weekend. Daily general admission is $8.


L&L Remodel and Landscape Show

Where: Tulsa Convention Center, 100 Civic Center
The home-and-garden show season continues. This show brings homeowners and area remodeling and building experts. Tickets are $5 for adults. Kids under 18 get in free.

Tulsa Original Music Showcase

Where: Cain's Ballroom, 423 N. Main Street
Featuring one of my favorite local bands, Stars Go Dim, along with Radio Radio, Motown Blood and The Last Slice. Tickets are $10.

Buffalo Soldier

Looking for something to do with the kids Friday night? Take 'em to see and hear the true story of our nation's longest-surviving Buffalo Soldier and veteran of the Spanish-American war and of the soldiers of the 9th and 10th cavalries. Tickets are $8.

Signature Symphony: Big Band Music

Where: TCC Van Trease PACE, 10300 E. 81st Street
Here it is, the music of Big Band's golden years, right here in Tulsa, Oklahoma. This concert will feature music from the likes of Basie, Ellington, the Dorsey Brothers, Benny Goodman and, certainly, more. It'll be a pleasure to be part of the first chair-bound, swing-dancing audience. Someone call Guinness. 

Love Letters

'Round the Bend Players, Tulsa's first senior theater troupe, will present a staged reading of A.R. Gurney's Love Ltters. Tickets are $8.

Bus Stop

Remember the old Marilyn Monroe flick, Bus Stop? Yeah. It's like that. It is, by the way, one of my most favorite plays ever. Tickets are $13 for adults, $10 for seniors, $9 for students and $6 for kids 12 and under.

Though I watched the Disney movie version of this classic fairy tale about 167,821 times as a child, something tells me the Tulsa Ballet rendition of one of the most technically challenging classical ballets is going to blow it out of the water. Marcello Angelini uses grand staging and gets and beautifully crafted costumes to breathe new life into the original, 1890 version of the ballet by Marius Petipa. The Tchaikovsky score is, I'm sure, not bad, either. Tickets are $20-70. Plus, if you think the time is right, you can propose on stage with the cast of The Sleeping Beauty. *swoon* Be still, my beating heart.

Valentine's 5-Mile Poker Run/Walk
When: 8am
Where: Veterans Park, 21st and Boulder
Entrants start this non-times event with one poker card. Run or walk one mile to get another; go two to get the third, and so on and so forth until all seven cards are in hand. At the end of the race, a volunteer will help runners/walkers sort their cards into their best five-card hand. The best hand gets first pick off the prize table full of running gear and gift certificates. Cost is just $5. Register by visiting RunnersWorld Tulsa.

Sweetheart Run
When: Saturday, 8:15am (5K), 9:15am (10K)
Where: Mohawk Park, on 36th Street North
So in love that you could run a 10K? Maybe you've been dating awhile and you've learned she doesn't put the cap back on her toothpaste - okay, so you're at least excited enough to run a 5K. Either way, be sure to register for this lovers' race at Fleet Feet at 61st and Yale. The cost starts at $20.

Fundraiser for Josh Forrest
When: 10am
Where: Wagoner Fire Department, 807 W. Cherokee
Get a real, down-home barbeque sandwich and help out an emergency medical services worker at the same time. Josh Forrest was on his way in to work at Integrity EMS when his car slid on a patch of ice and slammed into a tractor-trailer rig. Forrest was pinned in the wreckage for over an hour, and he remains in the ICU Muskogee Regional Medical Center. Make a donation at the door of the fundraiser event in Josh's name. If you can't make it to the event, stop by your nearest Wagoner First Bank & Trust Co. and slip a donation into an account for Josh's family that's set up there.

Don't miss one of my personal favorite Tulsa events. Ice skate hand-in-hand on the BOK Center's 17,000-square-foot indoor ice rink, snack on heart-shaped concessions to your hearts' content, watch skating demonstrations and maybe even win a prize or two. There's even face painting for the kids. Admission to the building is free and skate rental is $10 for adults and $5 for kids under age three and for those who bring their own skates. When you've skated until you can skate no more, hop a horse-drawn carriage ride through the streets of downtown Tulsa. A couple rides for $20 and a family of four rides for $25.

Super Shark Sundays

An Evening with Kris Kristofferson

Widely regarded as the greatest country songwriter since Hank Williams, Kristofferson's catalogue has been covered by over 500 artists, including Waylon Jennings, Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, The Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton.
