For a Valentine Time, Meet Me at Merritt's Bakery
Finally, I caved. After drooling over the Twitter feed of Merritt's Bakery all week long, I finally gave in and took my son to the Midtown location of Merritt's Bakery, at 15th and Harvard. There's only so many photos of sugary, frosted goodness a mortal girl can take, especially this close to Valentine's Day.
The cases at Merritt's are full - bursting, actually - of tasty, V-Day themed treats. There were tuxedo-style chocolate-covered strawberries - you know, the kind with the long, delicate stems. There were rose-topped petit fours. There were heart-shaped, frosted cakes and boxes of cake truffles and trays of assorted, red-and-white trimmed treats. Oh, my.
And, there were cookies. Lord have mercy, were there cookies.
We liked this one.
It's a classic sugar cookie, topped with Merritt's trademark frosting to look like one of those conversation hearts we all like to play with at this time of year.
Here's what happened when I put this show-stopping cookie in front of my two-year-old.
How do you like my time-lapse photography skills? Yeah, that's right. Fear this.
Here's the kid doing his ritual glancing about before sinking his teeth into something that will surely ruin his appetite for whatever nutritious fodder he may or may not have consumed at lunchtime.
Yikes - there's the evil eye. A kid behind us was looking at our cookie. How freaking dare he.
No matter now. It's time for the kill.
Dear Lord, I would just like to thank you right now for putting Valentine's Day before Lent this year. Because penitence and this cookie could not have occupied my little body at the same time without serious complications.
Nom, nom. Amen.
I know scads of TDT readers have been following Merritt's on Twitter this week. I know because we've been writhing in pain and wanting together, @-replying each other with threats to meet there to clean out the entire bakery.
Here in a minute you won't be able to say that I didn't give you a legitimate excuse to try to do just that.
Leave a comment on this post. You can tell me what you hope to get for Valentine's Day, what you got me for Valentine's Day, why you hate Valentine's Day thank you very much, what shoe size you wear or even your ABC's. It doesn't matter. Just leave a comment, and fast. I'm accepting them only until 4:30pm today (Friday).
Please the gods at Random.org and take home a half-dozen Valentine's Day-themed cupcakes for absolutely free. Today. In just a few hours. Practically right now. In fact, they're probably being decorated just for you, right this very second. How does that make you feel?
I have a total of a dozen cupcakes to give, so I'll choose two winners.
Merritt's or bust, y'all! Good luck.

I love valentine's day. I always get yellow roses.
The goodies at Merritt's, I love them all.
Unless Thom has turned into a different man, I expect nothing for Valentine's Day. Some cupcakes might help to soothe the pain of it all.
Me & my hubby will be staying in for V-day and a dozen cupcakes would be awesome (and ate immediately)!
Cupcakes are my fav dessert!!
This Valentines will have me cooped up with a new pup and a spoiled bulldog... I'll need sugar to keep myself going.
My favorite event that happens every Valentine's Day is our tradition of ordering Chinese Food in and spending some quality time together. We've been doing it ever since our first valentine's day together when we were dating. I've never been to Merritt's. I'd love to have those cupcakes for dessert!
I want a bathtub full of valentine candy hearts! Or a bunch o' cupcakes!
Your son is adorable!
Chocolate !! you must have it for Valentines day, anything else is just a nice add on
I already got an early Valentine's from my awesome boyfriend. He bought my very only little, beat-up, red pickup truck! I named it Buck.
Oh pick me! Nothing for V-day from hubs expected except a card. Lots of hugs and kisses from my Little Lam. Man, would these cupcakes be an awesome treat for my little ones.
Cute pics! Well, I already got flowers so... I don't know. Romantic dinner out perhaps? That'd be nice.
a friend has been obsessing over cake balls recently, but i do say, cupcakes are a nice alternative! :)
I love Merritt's. I use to go to there when it was Moms and they were in the little shopping strip across the street from FM Bank. I hope I can win me some cupcakes. Monday is my birthday lol.
I, coincidently, will get getting my wife a box of cookies from Merritt's to snack on while I wait on her hand and foot this Sunday.
& here I am just feemin' for something sweet! Merritt's does have some fine iced cookies, indeed!
Heres hoping I get a smile from my children when I bring them home cupcakes from Merritts that I won from Tasha
My MIL bought the cookies for dessert last night boy were they delicious! I also am super glad Valentine's is before Lent this year. We don't have Valentine's Day traditions but I am looking forward to celebrating it tonight with my husband (instead of on Sunday).
Those cookies look amazing! And thanks for your previous post...My husband and I signed up for the poker run, which we didn't even know existed until I read it on your blog!
I'm pining for flowers, but never get them. Maybe cupcakes will make it hurt less. *sob*
MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMERITTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We're not really big Valentine's day fans. We don't exchange gifts, but we will probably be treating ourselves to a fancy dinner somewhere soon. I do love cupcakes though!
I'm a florist, I love Valentines Day! :)
This is kind of a bitter/sweet Valentine's Day for me. My hubby & I are going through a divorce, but get along well enough to spend Valentine's Day together. I know...sounds crazy, but we get along great as long as we don't live together. Anyhow, we have NEVER in 13 years ever done ANYTHING for Valentine's Day & this year we are. Go figure!
I saw the pained look on my Sweetie's face this morning as he wracked his brain about how to not ruin my Valentine's Day AND my birthday!
Considering money issues have kind of screwed our Valentines day...some cupcakes would be mighty nice!
I'm with Digibutter (and I giggle a little when I say that in my head)...my broke self could use a cupcake. And maybe a hug.
I am hoping to get something shiny....but I'll take anything from Merritt's as well! Thanks for all you do Tasha, always great info!
I need these. Now. :)
I got my Valentine's present early! We're getting Scuba Certified next weekend! YEA!! I'm so excited!
Too late for those cupcakes, but I just wanted to say Happy Valentines Day to YOU Tasha darling!! I love you and your love for everything sweet (including your precious son)!
:-)
