What to Do in Tulsa This Weekend

Ottawa County Fair 2009

Anyone who says there's nothing to do in Tulsa has obviously never lifted a finger from the living room couch during a weekend in October.

If there's not a pumpkin patch and hayride nearby, there's the dozens of one-of-a-kind activities waiting at the Tulsa State Fair. If there's not a 10K to challenge you, there's a fall festival waiting to take the endurance of your appetite for fried cuisine to task.

In other words, don't dare utter that you're bored, else someone might smack you upside the head and then, mostly out of disbelief, take you out on the town and show you not only the error of your ways, but also a jolly good time.

To help you navigate the vast sea of things to do in and around Tulsa this weekend, I present to you, as heard every Friday morning on the KRMG Morning News with Joe Kelley, the latest edition of the TDT Weekend Rundown.

Tasha's Picks for the Weekend of Oct. 2

Corn dogs and spinney rides and a beer garden, oh my - catch all of that and more at this year's Tulsa State Fair. Feel free to gorge on the spaghetti-shaped ice cream, kettle korn on a stick and deep-fried bananas - after all, what's the Tulsa State Fair without it's acrobatic foodstuffs?Just promise not to puke on your kids when they whine and cry and beg you to ride the Himalaya with them and then march them up the street to Sears for new outfits and hair washings in the bathroom sink. Because I have no idea who would do such a thing. Weekend admission for adults this year is up to $10, with ticket costs for kids aged 5-12 at $6.

Music

Dave Matthews Band with Willie Nelson
When: Friday, 7pm; doors at 5:30
Where: BOK Center
Ah, Dave Matthews Band - the makers of the soundtrack of my life during those high school and college years. I'm sure I'm not the only one who hears the words, "so much to say," and, without thinking, hits the trail to Gypsy Coffee House in hopes of finding a way to rebel someplace between here and there. After Willie (Willie!) plays his bit and Dave busts out the incredible vocals of Big Whiskey and the Groogrux King, don't forget to post the set list on your blog. Because I'll need to see it to survive. Tickets are still available, and they're $65.

As soloists, each member has won the School's concerto competition, leading to performances at Alice Tully Hall and Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center. Hubba, hubba. Tickets are $25.

Theater and Art

First Friday Art Crawl

Think you've got what it takes to crawl from Gypsy Coffee House to Wallace Engineering, Brady Artists' Studio, CFC Chocolatier, Tulsa Glass Blowing Studio, Tulsa Artists' Coalition, Chrysalis Salon and then (whew!) to Lola's? My bet is that you do, especially if it means unwinding at Club 209 afterward. The event is free, unless you don't yet own a good pair of walking shoes.

Kids Stuff

Hardesty Regional Library

Renaissance Fair

Where: Martin Regional Library
William Shakespear has lost his inspiration, and his plays will disappear if you don't help him get it back. Yikes! A world without Shakespear? No, thank you. See history up close, jam to music, get elbow-deep in crafts, battles and laughs. This event is free and for all ages.

Disney on Ice: Worlds of Fantasy
When: Friday, Saturday, Sunday; Check DisneyonIce.com for times
Where: Expo Square Pavilion
Rev up for non-stop fun with three Disney blockbusters: CARS, The Little Mermaid and The Lion King. Then check out what's doin' in Pixie Hollow with Tinker Bell and the smokin' Disney Fairies (from the looks of the Web site, Dads, this show won't exactly be a total snoozer). Tickets are $20-36.

Halloween Stuff

Pumpkins

Pumpkin Patches Opening This Weekend
When: Friday, Saturday and Sunday
Where: Throughout Tulsa
Check out Carmichael's on Friday and Livesay Orchard in Porter on Saturday, and don't forget Pumpkin Town, which opened earlier this week. For even more patch-a-rific destinations, check out my list of Tulsa-area pumpkin patches.

The Maize Haunted Maze Opening Weekend
When: Friday and Saturday
Where: 32506 E. 61st St. in Broken Arrow
There's more to do at The Maize than just get lost - paintball, for one. Campfires, cow trains, hay rides and rubber ducky races for two through five. The Maize will be open Fridays and Saturdays throughout October, as well as on Halloween. But, no one is exactly stopping you from going right now.

Opening Weekend of The Castle of Muskogee Halloween Festival
When: Friday and Saturday, 6pm-10pm
Where: 3400 W Fern Mountain Road
If you haven't made it down to Muskogee for this 60-acre Halloween-themed park, you're missing out on a Green Country tradition. With a slew of activities ranging from not scary to really scary, the admission price of $0 is one heck of a deal. Activities cost, though, but there are discount packages for that - check out the $15 Child's Fun Pack and the Adult Fun Pack for $20, both of which include a spooky hayride and a turn in the Ultimate Maze. Boo! And I mean that in a good way.

Opening Weekend of Nightmare XVII
When: Friday-Saturday
Where: Guts Church, off the BA between Memorial and Mingo
Scary indeed, especially if you're not warned beforehand about the "little chat" at the end. Tickets are $8, or $15 for an express pass. While the Guts folks say it's cool for kids, I wouldn't recommend it for any child who wasn't old enough to be mortally embarrassed by a parental unit's request that he take his lunch to school in a brown paper bag.

Am I wrong, or is the Indie Emporium just next weekend? I went to the website and it just shows the 9th and 10th.

Lanna, you're absolutely right. Sorry about that. It's all better now. Thanks a ton for pointing it out - I would have totally shown up at the VFW on Saturday and looked like a dorkus aurelius. You saved me!

Phew - I know a ton of people volunteering (hopefully including myself) and we'd have all been in a panic! Thanks!

I'm exhausted just reading about everything going on in Tulsa this weekend!

Went to the fair last night for Ford Family Fun night - toured the fun house, rode bumper cars, ate raspberry popcorn, had a blast!

Thanks for the tips on the Nightingale Theater front, btw!

P.S. How's your standing in the Makeover War?
