The Best Sledding Spots in Tulsa

As I'm wont to do on a snowy day in Tulsa, I hopped on Twitter and Facebook to see where the best sledding spots are in Green Country.

What to Do in Tulsa This Weekend, Ice Storm 2010 Edition

My friend-in-blogging Carrisa over at and so she blogs did my job for me this week. Here's what she came up with for the rundown this weekend.

What to Have on Hand During an Oklahoma Ice Storm

Snow Day 2009

You can't say the word "ice" within earshot of Oklahoma without scaring the living daylights out of us. Blistering heat we can handle. Straight-line winds, no problem. Tornadoes are a spectator sport around here.  We whine when it snows but for the most part, we can take it.

As for ice, hell no, we won't go.

August: Osage County Arrives in Tulsa

Urban Tulsa Weekly arts writer Holly Wall put together a set of stories on the debut of native Tulsan Tracy Letts' August: Osage County for the Jan. 21 edition and let me tell you, it has me all excited in a my-family-is-dysfunctional-too! sort of way.

Things to Do With the Kids in Tulsa This Week

Looking for something to do with the kids this week? Get out your calendars and get ready to take notes, because I have a few ideas.

2010 Oklahoma Blog Awards. And word noms.

In finally sitting down to make my nominations for the 2010 Oklahoma Blog Awards, I decided that I'd like to share about a few of the blogs that have caught my attention.

The Dentist and the Kid

The Dentist

Earlier this week we had our first dentist appointment. Well, not my first dentist appointment. My son's. It was his first dentist appointment.

The Dentist

That's pretty much my sentiment, sweetheart. The dentist and I aren't exactly buds. After three years of orthodontia and countless appointments spent pinned down and wired with metal in the chair of a nice man named Dr. Katz, I wasn't exactly giddy to hop back into a dentist's chair.

Read more about our experience at the office of Dr. Mark Davis on my blog at Ttownmoms.com.

Calling all Tulsa Bloggers

It's been awhile since the bloggers of the Tulsa had a regular meet-up.

Today we say, enough of that.

What to Do in Tulsa This Weekend

Rain, rain (and a chance of flurries), go away - at least, until this weekend is over. This is the most we've had going on here in Tulsa since the weekend before Christmas, so don't miss any opportunity to get out and live it up, water falling from the sky or not. Hey. I'm talking to you.

As heard every Friday morning on the KRMG Morning News with Joe Kelley, here's what to do in Tulsa this weekend.

Denial

DSC09412

One day, a psychologist named Elisabeth Kübler-Ross came up with the five stages of grief. You know the drill: Denial. Anger. Bargaining. Depression. Last, Acceptance.

At 22 months, my son is too young to understand the late-night wars. All he knows is that he loves - no, lurves - Conan O'Brien. I can't blame him. I've been practically obsessed since I was in the ninth grade myself.

Ever since six months or so ago, when I figured out we could watch as much Conan as we wanted via online video provider and mushy-mush creator Hulu, my kiddo has been equally enthralled. He demands the show daily.

This, of course, leaves me in a bit of a pinch.

Hear an audio example of toddler denial on my blog at Ttownmoms.com.

The Coolest Thing Shakin' in Tulsa Tonight

The folks at Philbrook Museum have been more busy than usual preparing for this month's Third Thursday event. Why? Because Eames Demetrios is coming to Tulsa.

Yeah. That Eames Demetrios.

Power Lunch: Cosmo Cafe & Bar

A new cafe/bar concept that got its start in south Tulsa in 2004 has landed on Brookside with a makeover to match.

Tulsa Gets Extreme

As you probably know by now, ABC's Emmy award-winning show "Extreme Makover: Home Edition" plans to reward a deserving Tulsa family with a new home on Feb. 3.

Tulsa. It's Mondo.

You guys. Check this out.

Are you not a better person for having watched this? I'm pretty sure I am. I'm also much thinner for all the laughing I did, especially during the twenty-second intro. Also because of the "I am one New Moon-loving negro" comment.

Ha! Mercy.

If you watched the clip you'll know that the show is Mondo Tulsa, and the above is the first episode of the series. Robert Walters is frontman, writer and creator of MT, with Erin McHenry and T.J. Clark behind the camera as producers. It's all under the umbrella of Seven Tummy Productions, probably the most adorable and cuddly production company name ever.

I can't wait to see next week's edition.

What to Do With the Kids in Tulsa on Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Theater at OSU-Tulsa

Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. It's a day of remembrance and hope. It's a time to observe the life of a man who wholly devoted himself to the ideals of peace and quality and, in the end, had to sacrifice his life for his glorious dream.

There's another translation of MLK Day for all of us, especially we who have munchkins at home: It's a three-day weekend for the kiddos. Problem is, many of us don't get to sit this holiday out from work.

Redeeming Storytime

Momma's Saturday Book Club

We've all been to storytime, and let's be frank: More often than not, it's boring. It's a way we moms feel okay about passing the time. After all, there's the added bonus that we're edifying our children with age-appropriate literature, but still. Between yawns, most of us are fantasizing about what's on TV back at the house, whether we want to admit it or not.

Momma's Saturday Book Club is different.

Learn how on my blog at Ttownmoms.com.

What To Do in Tulsa This Weekend

Tulsa Performing Arts Center

We're going to try something different here on this week's edition of What To Do in Tulsa This Weekend.

Show Me Your Books

I'm always looking for a free ride. In this new life of mine as a mom, I'm always looking for ways to replace goods and services we pay for with cost-free ways to get things done, whether it's the grocery shopping or movie rental. I give myself double super secret probation points for finding local free stuff.

Just as I'm never far from a bargain bin, I'm never far from the library. Each of the 25 branches of the Tulsa City-County Library, five of which are open seven days a week, offers a plethora of options for picky freeloaders like me. Check it out.

Eighth

BOK Center

Tulsa might be the 45-largest city in the U.S. but, according to the latest reports from Tulsa Business Journal, our newest, largest event spot, the BOK Center, ranked eighth among top U.S. venues for ticket sales in 2009, and twentieth worldwide. In the world of event centers and arenas (yet another one of those places where size really does matter), that puts us in league with cities like New York, Dallas, Atlanta and Philadelphia. Ahead of Phillie, actually.

Need Wedding Advice?

Our Wedding Day

Calling all brides! Now that you're done with your weekend of visiting with vendors, trying samples, learning how to walk a catwalk in a billowing white dress (or, in my case, what my best friend likes to call my hooker wedding dress) at the wedding shows that were in town since Saturday, be sure to pick up the latest edition of Oklahoma Magazine, the annual wedding edition, free at a variety of locations throughout the Tulsa area.

Then, turn to page 134. Then to page 142. And finally to page 155. Here are snippets of the stories you'll find there.

What follows are the events that have Tulsa buzzing this week. From midget motorsports smackdowns to a talk from one of Tulsa's best-known coffee aficionados on the green side of the drink, it's all happening in Tulsa this week.

What To Do in Tulsa This Weekend

While most of us are still trying to get back in the groove of the daily grind after the holiday season, the folks behind the music halls, stages and destinations of this city have been hard at work making sure you have plenty to do this weekend. Just remember to bundle up before you head out on any excursions.

As heard every Friday morning on the KRMG Morning News with Joe Kelley, here's what to do in Tulsa this weekend.

The Kids Are Home. Now What?

White Christmas 2009

When your mom has to leave for work at 7:30 and the bus doesn't come until 8, and she doesn't trust you in the house for fear you'll burn the house down or tie the cat to the ceiling fan or worse, you have no choice but to wait outside for the school bus.

Thanks to just about every school in the Tulsa area, no child will have to wait outside in temperatures cold enough to, literally, freeze his fingers and toes.

If your kids are home tomorrow, or even for the rest of the week, that doesn't mean you have to stare at each other from across the room for the next two days. Instead, bundle up - meaning, thermal underwear, layered outer clothing, heavy coats, hats, gloves, scarves and, if you're cool like my kid, a hatscarfmuff - and head out on the town and spend some quality time together.

I know what you're thinking. What exactly is there to do in Tulsa on a weekday, anyway?

I'm glad you asked. I have a few ideas.

The Concert.

Hilton Southern Hills

About that concert I've been teasing you all about: Have I mentioned that it was incredible, exciting, intimate and spine-tingling?

Yes? Over and over again, you say? Well, I only repeat myself because the concert was, in fact, incredible, exciting, intimate and spine-tingling.

Jumping on the Bed at Hilton Southern Hills

Hilton Southern Hills

I really should be doing dishes or laundry or taking yet more quizzes on Facebook to find out what kind of animal I'll be in my next life, but I'd much rather reminisce with you all about what I got to do on New Years Eve.

Resolving

LaFortune Park

As we all cinch ourselves in to take on the resolutions we made three days ago, I wonder what our city, if it was a person, would determine to do in twenty-ten.

More on This Later

I'm about to break out what my dear, sweet Guatemalan friend would call my white girl cooking skills and attempt to whip up some yummy Mexican food - specifically, tacos. They may not be authentic, but they will be cheesy. And spicy. And yummy in the hearts and minds of those who will consume them, so don't judge, b.

Anyway. I can't wait until I have a minute to tell you all, my dead-sexy readers, every single last detail about what my husband and I got up to on New Years Eve.
