Tulsa Gets Extreme

As you probably know by now, ABC's Emmy award-winning show "Extreme Makover: Home Edition" plans to reward a deserving Tulsa family with a new home on Feb. 3.

How cool is that? That means we Tulsans get to play host not just to the show producers who will be hanging out here for the next couple of weeks, but also to the entire country as they look in on the lucky family and where they made the home they've had.

Help to kick off the Extreme home build kickoff at Donald W. Reynolds Center on the University of Tulsa campus tomorrow (Tuesday, Jan. 19), and don't forget to wave to the cameras. A community rally starts at 9:30am, and all are welcome. Keep in mind that the family's name hasn't yet been released. It's supposed to be a surprise, you know.

The famous door knock will happen later this month, on Jan. 28. That same day, the build will officially begin. It's a whirlwind process, this Extreme Makeover business.

Just one week later, the new home will be revealed to the family. There will be hugs and crying and probably a squee here and there. Mostly, it'll be glorious.

I can't wait to find out who the lucky family is.

For the third time Owasso-based home builder Simmons Homes is teaming up with the show. In March 2008, Simmons Homes helped New Orleans residents rebuild after Hurricane Katrina. Simmons helped to build a house for a Dewey, Okla., family under the banner of "Extreme Makeover," too. Because this time the family chosen to receive a new home is in the builder's backyard, it's special, Owner Greg Simmons said.

Wanna be part of the magic beyond the kickoff tomorrow? Simmons Homes is seeking skilled and licensed craftsmen to volunteer (that includes providing your own transportation, lodging and food, folks) for onsite shifts at the Extreme House. Volunteers needed include electricians, painters, framers, plumbers and drywallers. Employers, you can get in on this by allowing employees to participate. Or, donate tools and supplies.

The hour-long episode of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition Does Tulsa will air in early March. The show airs Sundays at 7pm Tulsa time on KTUL Channel 8.

Any clues as to what area of Tulsa the family lives in? How do they plan to route all the volunteer traffic?
