Wild Brew 2010: Food, Music, Beer and You

Ladies and gents, we have a winner!

I loved this story because it's real. It's relatable. And it's a classic story of that first beer. Plus, it made my tummy do that nervous churn-y thing. I like that in a story. And I loved that he remembered the name of the officer who reprimanded him but, ultimately, let him off the hook.

Enjoy your passes, Michael! Here's to hoping that the beers you'll enjoy this weekend will cause you much less angst than that first one did.

It's not very often one sees a child at a downtown restaurant in the middle of the day. Suits and ties, yes; Toy Story light-up sandals and Zany Bands, no.

Maybe that's why when my little guy visited downtown earlier this week to try my friend Rusty's new restaurant, Mod's Coffee and Crepes, he attracted the attention of the media.

Power Lunch: Cafe Samana

We waited with anticipation to see what would become of the space that now houses Cafe Samana when its former tenant, Blue Moon Bakery, moved north on Brookside to Center 1 late last year. When we stopped in for lunch, we found a restaurant, open since Feb. 5, that is more than worthy of the space.

Berry Pickin' in Tulsa

"Where can my kids visit a farm and pick their own berries?" It's summer, and that's one of the most oft-asked questions here at TDT lately.

I have to say, I'm so, so glad that you're asking. Picking berries with the kids isn't only an easy and satisfying way to spend time together as a family, but it's also great for building bright minds and healthy bodies. Plus, freshly picked berries is one of the most magical taste adventures there is. Ask anyone who's had a just-picked strawberry, or a cobbler made from the blackberry bush out back. It's heaven in a Pyrex pan.

Canebrake Crab Boil and BBQ on the Bluff: Tulsa Foodies, Rejoice!

Who says snooty foodies can't find good eats around T-Town? Well, you can. And I should know, because I happen to be a snooty foodie myself.

My picks for the next couple of weeks include:

Crab Boil and Beer Tasting at The Canebrake
When: Friday, May 21, 5:30-9:00pm
Where: The Canebrake, 33241 E. 732nd Road in Wagoner
Check out the patio at The Canebrake and a tasting of four beers from 5:30-7pm and all-you-care-to-eat seafood buffet from 6-9pm. The buffet includes a New England Clam Chowder Soup, salads like Green Bean, Feta and Walnuts with Roasted Shallot Dressing and Maine Potato Salad with Boiled Eggs and Pickles, apps like Limed Shrimp and Melon Skewers and Spring Onion and Wild Mushroom Canape, desserts that cover an array of the pasty chef's finest sweets and, of course, the boil: Blue Hill Boil with Peekytoe Crabs, Fresh Corn and Dill, New Potatoes and Canebrake Kicked-Up Crawfish. Beers up for tasting are Dixie, Fuller, Stegmeier and Triple Karmeleit. No need to worry if it rains - if that happens, the buffet will simply move inside. BBQ on the Bluff at Stone Bluff Cellars

The chefs of Silver Spoon Catering will be providing the food for this kickoff to summer at the winery. Check out an evening performance that will feature Autumn Boukadakis. Appetizers and snacks will be provided by Jim's "Never on Sunday" Coney Island - you know, the one you've always driven past at 11th and Harvard and wondered about. Tickets are $10. Restaurateurs Expand Downtown

Business has been good for Libby Auld since she opened Eloté Café and Catering, a restaurant serving healthful and ecologically conscious Mexican food at 514 S. Boston Ave., in May 2008.

It’s been so good, in fact, that Auld has been able to reinvest her earnings into a new eco-friendly bar, complete with a Mexican wrestling ring and bimonthly Luchador tournaments, right next door to her restaurant.
